WELCOME to Casa Azul de Montoyas

Marcial Montoya, born 1938 in Albuquerque, and raised in Quemado by his mother Onesima Montoya. the sixth of ten girls born to Crescensio and Sofia Padilla in Mangus NM.
At the age of 17, Marcial jointed the United States Air Force. He became an airplane mechanic and flew during the Vietnam War. At age 21, he went to California where he started his own family with
Rosie Montoya. There they raised three Children – Marcy, Robert and Daniel.
After 30 years of being a General Contractor in California, Marcial came back to his roots in Quemado to take care of his mother Onesima. He purchased his property and started building his home. Now called “CASA AZUL de Montoyas”.
At the beginning there was only a little red wooden barn on the place. Soon he started transforming the outside and inside of the barn to make it a solid and livable space. “I loved my mother but I was 65 years old and couldn’t live under her thumb…” he always said with a smile on his face. He added two rooms, bathrooms and kitchen and suddenly the little barn became a house.
In 2000 Marcial started to add an addition to his home where he could host family and friends. “When you live so far out, you need rooms for your people to stay.” It took a little while to build being only semi-retired and building the house all by himself.
One day in 2012 he attended a dance in Pie Town, NM where he met his wife to be Andrea-Katharina McWhorter, a widow from Datil, NM. Katharina emigrated in 2008 from Germany to New Mexico to live her American dream to be a part of the American West. But times got tough and finding work in this rural area was difficult. In 2012, Katharina became a licensed Massage Therapist and opened her office in the Montoya Residence.
In 2015 Katarina and Marcial decided to give the home the final touch. During the remodeling process the idea of opening the home for travelers came along. “Wouldn’t it be nice to give people a nice and homey place to stay after a long day on the road…?” The decision was made!”

Today, Casa Azul De Montoya’s, has three comfortable guest rooms with en-suite baths and a guest living room. There is also a cozy kitchen and dining area where Katharina and Marcial love to cook and entertain their guests, friends and family. They also enjoy the company of their dog “Samba”, their cat “Buttercup” and their two horses “Blacky” and “Pancho”. That said: well-behaved pets are always welcome.

The room was clean, put together, and comfortable. Kat was an absolute delight! She was wonderful to talk to and very accommodating. Breakfast was very tasty as well and we enjoyed all the food. Plus we got to play with the baby goats before we took off in the morning! All around a wonderful experience and I highly recommend staying here if your travels take you along this route.

Casa Azul is ideally located to visit the NRAO Very Large Array, located about an hour's drive to the east. I was there to attend the VLA open house. Katharina and her animals provided a warm welcome, comfortable home, good food and happy company. This is where I will stay the next time I'm in western New Mexico.

Perfect overnight stay. The owner is friendly, welcoming, and professional. We played with the goats, sat on the patio, and relaxed in the room. Even when the power went out from a powerful monsoon we had backup lights. Dont miss the homemade breakfast!

Kat, the owner, is charming, warm, pleasant, and a very good cook. We stayed for 5 days, during which Kat was very helpful and accommodating. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. I definitely recommend Casa Azul to anyone visiting this part of New Mexico.

The location is very much remote! Highly recommend bringing along lots of snack, lunch & dinner if you don't have anything planned! There is 1 restaurant which i was told is a hit or miss this time of yr, also a gas station & small convience store but the prices were bumoed up a bit of course. Kat, the host at casa Azul does offer breakfast & coffee which is served as a traditional kitchen table breakfast with great conversation with the host! She is very inviting into her home & does very much interact with her guests (which isn't a bad idea being we are using a bedroom in her home with her & her pets) it was super comfortable & very quiet! We had "the ranch" as our room for 2 nights which included a king size bed, & a small refrigerator, the bathroom was a good size & the shower was amazing after a day at the lake!! One thing I would recommend is bringing maybe a small portable dvd player or something for television...which was definitely not a bother to us since we don't watch much TV at home neither but since there is no TV in the room or in the living area. The home is beautiful as well as the yard super nice & clean, Blanca the dog is super cute, the cats & the horse were great to have around as well!! We enjoyed our Stay & we will be back some day I know it!!

If you have never driven on Hwy 60 entirely West from Socorro, NM to Phoenix, AZ, then it's a must do. Stop in Socorro and visit the Mineral Museum; check out the sleepy, historical town of Magdalena; stop and wonder at the VLA (Very Large Arrays) sitting in the middle of nowhere within the San Agustin Plains; eat delicious Pie in Pie Town and maybe you will be lucky enough to see a Continental Divide Trail through hiker. Of course, you will need a place to stay, spending so much time in awe and in the middle of nowhere. We found a gem in Quemado, NM. Casa Azul is a gorgeous adobe bed and breakfast surrounded by stunning scenery. Clean rooms, great company (Kat and her animals are so much fun), and cozy cozy cozy. Thank you Kat for a fantastic, fun stay.

Casa Azul's Bed and Breakfast accommodations were very clean, comfortable and homey. There are not many good options in the backcountry but thankfully there is Casa Azul. I arrived the day after a snow storm and the host knew the local restaurant was closed. She was very thoughtful and saved a dinner for me although it was not part of the reservation. The breakfast she made was very delicious and presentation was beautiful. She checked with me the night before on food allergies and preferences. The property was a home away from home and very peaceful. If I could stay for more days I would have! Thank you!
